Our Staff

Our team of twelve vets, seven nurses, and eleven administration staff proudly dedicate ourselves to the care and well-being of your animals, large and small. Our vets include two post-graduate certificate level advanced practitioners, and 4 in training for certificates.

Ystwyth Vets is a Veterinary Nurse Training and Assessment Practice. Our nurses are qualified assessors, enabled to train student nurses and to oversee and assess their experience in the course of their work. We welcome applications from trainee nurses in need of placements.

Our Vets

Hywel Williams BSc BVetMed MRCVS (London 1984)

Director and Practice Owner

Hywel is one of the partners of the practice and has been here longer than he can remember! He grew up in a Welsh-speaking family on a farm in the Conwy Valley, gained a degree in Agriculture from Bangor University before graduating from the Royal Veterinary College, London.

Hywel has developed Celtic Breeding Services, a sheep breeding company attached to the practice.

After 30 years Hywel says he still feels privileged to be doing a job that he really enjoys and being a member of the farming community. When not at work, he can be found at home farming or mountain walking.

 

Philip Thomas BVetMed MRCVS (London, 1987)

Director and Practice Owner

I have been working as a vet since 1987 and in Ystwyth vets since 1999 . I joined the management team in 2001. I am married to Kate and we have 4 children, 2 whippets and a cat (the cat is the boss). I’m a Cardi, having being born and raised in the area. I attended Rhydypennau and Penglais schools before going to the RVC in London.

I have worked in practices across south and mid Wales, Scotland and a stint with VSO in Cambodia before coming back home. I am involved with various veterinary and community projects.

 

Kate O’Sullivan MVB MSc CertSAS MRCVS (Dublin 1988)

Director and Practice Owner

I have been at Ystwyth Vets since 1997, and am married to Phil, with 4 children. I speak Welsh fluently, attending night classes when I lived in Llandeilo.  I hold a Surgery Certificate since 2004, and became an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery in 2017. So clearly, surgery is my thing! I spend a lot of my free time with my family and our dogs, running and cycling in the fantastic area in which we live.

Dafydd Jones MA VetMB MRCVS (Cambridge 2004)

Director and Practice Owner

Dafydd is a native Welsh speaker from North Wales, where he was brought up on a sheep and cattle farm. He graduated from Cambridge in 2004 and worked at Ystwyth Vets for three years. He returned to work at the practice in 2013 after working in New Zealand and North Wales.

Dafydd enjoys all aspects of mixed practice, but has a special interest in horse and cattle work, and is currently studying for a certificate in large animal medicine.

Harry Williams

Director and Practice Owner

Harry qualified from Cambridge University in 2016. After working in South Wales and a short stint out in New Zealand, Harry returned home to Aberystwyth and joined Ystwyth Vets in 2020.

Harry has a particular interest in cattle and sheep work but enjoys the variety of mixed practice.

Outside of work Harry enjoys all sports (transitioning from participant to supporter) and farming at home.

Diane Heyder-Bruckner BSc BVSc Cert AVP (SAM), MRCVS (Bristol, 2007)

Diane is French, grew up in Spain, and now is learning Welsh. She has worked in New Zealand, Welshpool, and Llanrwst before coming to Aberystwyth at the end of 2011. She enjoys all aspects of mixed practice, and holds a certificate in small animal medicine, gaining her Advanced Practitioner status in this subject in 2021.

When not working, Diane enjoys outdoor activities (weather permitting) including running, swimming and hill walking, and spending time with her rescue dogs and cat and two young children

Glesni Arfon-Powell BVSc MRCVS (Liverpool 2007)

Glesni, a Welsh speaker, comes originally from Anglesey, and joined the practice in 2007. She has a special interest in oncology and cardiology, and currently divides her time between the practice and rearing her two children, baking, and running her home craft business.

Hannah Hunt BVetMed DVM MRCVS (London, 2015)

Hannah joined Ystwyth in 2015 following graduation from the Royal Veterinary College, London. After a few years in a mixed vet role Hannah embarked on an adventure to New Zealand in 2018 as a dairy vet, tackling large scale herd health and reproduction management, whilst also ticking off as many bucket list items as possible.

She returned to Ystwyth in 2019 to resume mixed vet life and has embraced the added challenge of studying for a certificate in small animal surgery. 

Unable to sit still for long Hannah can often be found running trails (when the Welsh weather permits) or finding various craft projects to turn her hand to. 

Iwan Lewis BSc BVSc MRCVS (Bristol, 2016)

Iwan is a Welsh speaking farmer’s son from a sheep and beef suckler farm outside Machynlleth. Iwan saw practice with us as a student and decided to join us after graduating from Bristol university.

Iwan enjoys all aspects of mixed practice but has a special interest in farm animal work.

In his spare time, Iwan enjoys all sports and plays for a local rugby team, sings in a male voice choir and spends time at home on the farm.

Alice Whittle BSc BVSc MRCVS (Bristol, 2016)

Alice grew up in London, is half french and has been visiting her grandmother in the Dysinni Valley near Tywyn for as long as she can remember and where she spent 3 years working in a mixed practice after studying in Bristol.

Alice loves working with a mixed species caseload and is currently studying for a certificate in small animal ophthalmology.

Alice has been learning Welsh at evening classes and is keen to have a go at any activity that gets her out into the fresh air with her husband Jimmy.

She is now a proud new mum too! 

Edward Moss BSc(hons) BVSc MRCVS

Ed joined the practice in October 2021 after over ten years working in mixed practice in Wales. He particularly enjoys ultrasonography and surgery. 

He and his wife Sara have recently had their third child which means he spends a lot of time out in the garden looking for distraction. He looks back wistfully to the days when he had time for singing, panto and sea rowing.

Holly Brien BVMSci (Hons) MRCVS (Surrey 2021)

“Holly studied at Surrey Vet School finishing her course in autumn 2021 after completing her final year during the pandemic. Originally from Birmingham, she is enjoying her new lifestyle in Aberystwyth and is making the most of the amazing landscape and greenery!

Since commencing her career as a mixed vet with the Ystwyth Team, she enjoys all aspects of the job. She particularly is interested in dairy work and small animal medicine.

In her free time she enjoys trying out new bars and food spots, being active and cocktail making! Holly is also taking Welsh lessons in her efforts to adapt to life in Wales.”

Our Nurses

Nerys Daniel RVN (2008)

Head Nurse

Nerys is a Welsh-speaking local farmer’s daughter.  Nerys studied an Animal Care course in Carmarthen whilst on work experience at the practice.

Nerys is Head Nurse at the Practice and has completed the course in Anaesthesia. She is the equine nurse at the practice, and an AI technician with the Celtic Breeding Services.

Nerys is kept busy at home with running a successful home business backing and training horses, plus competing on her own horses when she gets the time.

 

Sarah Jones RVN (2006)

Sarah joined the practice in 2001, and completed her nurse training in Pencoed College, Bridgend. Sarah hails from LLwyngwril, a tiny village in Gwynedd. She currently works part-time, spending time with her son, and a variety of cats (some hand-reared from birth). She has completed nurse dentistry training, and is the Senior Nursing Clinical Coach in the practice.

Dawn Vose RVN (1996)

Dawn moved here from Surrey where she lived on a houseboat and now lives near Ysbyty Ystwyth in a remote cottage.

She started working in a Veterinary Practice in 1986 as a trainee nurse and progressed to Head Nurse after qualifying. She enjoys all aspects of veterinary nursing.

Dawn enjoys walking her Irish terrier Ivy in the hills and also has two 13yr old cats called Will & Grace.

Leysan Clift RVN

Leysan joined the practice in 2020, during the second pandemic lockdown, having moved to Wales from Essex the previous year. She enjoys all aspects of our busy practice workload, and when not at work has lots of animals keeping her and her partner busy at their smallholding.

Alwenna Jenkins RVN

Alwenna started working at Ystwyth Vets in March 2017 after completing an Equine diploma course. She studied in Veterinary Nursing at Abbeydale college in Monmouth where she travelled once a week whilst working in practice the rest of the week. She is now a Registered Veterinary Nurse, qualifying in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. Her key interest is medical and surgical nursing.

Alwenna is a Welsh speaker and comes from a local farm near Machynlleth where she helps out with all the animals, and enjoys horse riding and walking her dog Poppy and Ruby in her free time.

Sasha Chillery

Veterinary nurse assistant

Sasha is our newest member of the nursing team and her role is to assist the nurses in their work as well as basic animal care, animal handling and keeping the wards clean and tidy.

Sasha is orginally from Hereford but has spent most her life in Aberystwyth. Her goal is to become a qualified veterinary nurse and would like to specialise in nursing small animals and exotics.

In her spare time, she likes spending time with her family, loves reading and enjoys walking her dogs Marley & Juke.

Cari Davies

Animal Care Assistant

Cari is a Welsh speaker and comes from Llanfair Caereinion. Cari joined the practice in September 2019 after completing an Animal Management course and a Veterinary Care Assistant course at Reasheath Collage.

In her spare time Cari likes reading, horse riding and spending time with her pets. 

 

Business Support Staff

Jan Mason

Jan has been our Receptionist since 1995, having previously worked at a structural surveyors office. Jan loves her 3 horses, Flynn. Bunny and Harry and is a regular competitor in local shows, doing dressage and showing classes, when not hacking out, and generally enjoying the countryside in all weathers. Jan describes her dog Maisie the bull terrier as more project than pet.

In her spare time, Jan loves gardening and riding her Yamaha 850 around the Welsh country side.

Karen Rees

Karen, a native Welsh speaker, has been a member of the admin/reception team since 1993, having previously worked for the Welsh Pony & Cob Society. Originally from Aberystwyth, Karn now lives in the countryside and divides her time between her 3 adult children, family and close friends. Karen has 3 horses and enjoys walking, in particular along the Wales Coastal Path with like-minded friends.

Colette Thomas

Colette is the practice TB co-ordinator.

A Welsh speaker from Aberystwyth, and also fluent in French, Colette attended Aberystwyth University where she studied English Literature and French.

Colette enjoys many activities outside of work including photography (mainly pictures of her dog Teddy) ,traveling, going to the cinema and also dabbles in embroidery and other crafts.

Tracey Watson-Smith

Tracey joined the practice’s business support team in 2007 following an administrative post at Trawscoed farm. She has acquired Tilly the cat, and enjoys spending her leisure time with her small grand-daughter, walking, reading and cooking.

Nicola Myring-Thomas

I have been a member of the Ystwyth business support team since February 2016, following twelve years at Padarn Doctor’s Surgery. I studied Equine studies at Aberystwyth University and qualified as a Riding instructor.

I have two children that keep me busy, as well as our dog Shadow and Inka the cat, and I run a dog-stay service at home with my husband. I enjoy running, cycling, home improvements and gardening and I absolutely love working within in a veterinary practice, amongst like minded people!

Sioned Davies

Sioned joined the team following a role as a dispenser at Lloyds Pharmacy after leaving school. Sioned, a Welsh Speaker, lives just oustside Aberaeron and in her spare time, she enjoys walking her springer spaniel Millie, socialising with her friends and rallying. She has just had a baby boy, so spare time might be hard to find for a while!

Emily Shuker

I was brought up in Shropshire in a village called Clun,  I left Shropshire in 2002 to move to Somerset with my husband and 4 children,  I have always been a Receptionist (32 years) and have been a vets’ receptionist for 19 years, the latter 10 of which were at Bristol Vet School.

I moved up to Aberystwyth to be nearer my sister and live on her Farm, helping with the animals (sheep, horses, chickens, dogs and cats) and the cats have moved into my house! I enjoy the peace, and space for walking, which I love.

I have 4 granddaughters but no animals yet, except the farm cats! I’m sure it won’t be long before I have a collection of waifs and strays.

I love crochet, reading, walking and baking and spending as much time as I can with my family.

Angharad Jenkins

Angharad joined our Business Support Team  in October 2021. She has spent the last 20 years as an Office Manager at a local jewellery shop. Angharad lives locally on a busy farm with her husband and two boys. She enjoys spending time taking Pegi, the family dog on long walks as well as day-to-day jobs on the farm; she especially enjoys lambing season. If she has any free time she spends it baking tasty treats for the family.

Paul Scullion

Business Support; Accounts

Paul Scullion works part-time as our accounts manager. He is an accountant and has worked for a number of companies, including the Police, before joining our practice in the summer of 2014. In his spare time he enjoys long distance running and cycling and operates a cycle repair business and teaches yoga.

 

Steven Grimster

Steven is originally from the Wirral.  He came to Aberystwyth to study Zoology and never returned home.  He joins us after working for several years in pharmacy.  Away from work he is attempting to learn Welsh with the help of his wife, Gwenllian.  He enjoys quizzes and games, but his favourite way to spend time is to watch Doctor Who with his cat, Henry.
